Triathlon Coaching in Metro Detroit

Hi,

My name is Ian Charles and 2009 was my 20th season as a triathlete.

I began racing in the UK and was a founder member of the Coventry Triathlon Club. I began coaching in 1992 when my wife and some of the other ladies in the club were selected for the World Championships.

We emigrated to the US in 1997 and a combination of work and very small children prevented us from training and racing until 2006. At that time, our ten year old was a faster swimmer than either of us and we decided that enough was enough!

I started training again and I now get to coach my wife, my children and a bunch of friends .... all of whom seem to stand on the podium more frequently than me.

I qualified as USAT certified triathlon coach in August 2008 and I offer a coaching service to both experienced and beginner triathletes in the Metro Detroit area.

For more details of my training philosophy see my blog at http://engineeredendurance.blogspot.com

Why Engineered Endurance?

The first reason is that I'm an engineer by training. I've got a Ph.D. in high-strain fatigue and, as I've studied sports science over the years, I've been surprised by how close the analogy is between terms like Training Stress, Lactate Threshold and Training Stess Balance with their equivalent concepts in engineering.

The second reason is, that most triathletes, I love a "go faster" gadget and I must have "tested" dozens of fairly useless things over the years. All of these were "guaranteed" to knock seconds if not minutes off of my time .... in fact, if I'd ever used them all in the same race, I'd have finished in under ten minutes!

Finally, I love the science of triathlon and the fact that triathletes are always the first adopters of new technologies and new training methodologies.
